MAT PECI COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TOURISM IN JAKARTA
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the role of the Mat Peci community communication in the development of community-based environmental education tourism in South Jakarta. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with a case study method through in-depth interview, participatory observation, and documentation techniques. The results of the study indicate that community communication plays a strategic role in building environmental awareness, strengthening community participation, and encouraging behavioral changes toward sustainable environmental management. The communication patterns applied are participatory, dialogic, and experiential-based, allowing the community to be actively involved as subjects in environmental activities. In addition, the community implements an integrated communication strategy, encompassing educational communication through river school programs, persuasive communication in building community awareness, experiential-based communication through educational tourism activities, and digital communication to expand the reach of information. This communication also plays a role in community empowerment, both in capacity building, ecological awareness, and economic benefits through waste management and urban farming programs. Furthermore, the development of community-based environmental education tourism by the Mat Peci Community demonstrates an integration between education, recreation, and environmental conservation. The active involvement of the community makes this model a form of community-based sustainable tourism. Thus, community communication functions as a primary driver in connecting environmental, social, and economic aspects in the development of sustainable environmental education tourism.
